Grow-A-Long Seed Sowing Update (17 April 2024)

Now is the perfect time to sow China Asters (Callistephus chinensis)they are light sensitive and need long days to germinate well and put on good bushy vegetative growth.

Other seeds I’m sowing over the next week or so are:

  • Amaranthus
  • Panicum Frosted Explosion
  • Orach
  • Nicotiana
  • Statice (Limonium)
  • Strawflowers (Helichrysum)
  • Wrinkled Cress (you can keep sowing this it’s incredibly fast)

Basically anything left in your seed box!

To keep bed flipping to a minimum especially for the smaller garden I have delayed starting the Strawflowers and the Statice so you are not struggling for a space to put them and you have a garden bursting with flowers just when you need them the most!

27 March 2024 Sowing Cosmos, Hollyhocks, Phlox and Zinnia, Tomatoes and Cucumbers.

What I’m sowing late March 2024 Cosmos, Hollyhocks, Phlox and Zinnia, Tomatoes and Cucumbers.

Cosmos started too early will be forced into flowering before the plants have achieved good vegetative growth, but started too late they will grow too much and not flower until very late in the season.

This is all to do with photoperiods which can seem quite complicated but all you need to know is March to early April is ideal in terms of light levels to get over this. Hollyhocks and Zinnia’s are also light sensitive so for best results sow now.

Phlox if intended to go with the Dahlia’s to recreate my patio pot displays are also best sown now.

Hold off sowing your China Asters for now, they need more light for best results and will be triggered into flowering late summer. There is more information on individual photoperiods in the Grow-A-Long video for each seed variety /plant.

Sowing Schedule Update 26 February 2024

The next seeds that I’m going to be starting this week, with a recap on what I have sown so far. Sowing this week will be Stocks both cut flower and for pots.

Rudbeckia and Carnations can be started if you can keep them frost free.

Phlox, I will do two sowings one now for my mixed borders and one in a couple of weeks to go in the Dahlia containers. Cosmos, Hollyhocks and Zinnias are all incredibly light sensitive, started too early will result in weak short plants. For a detailed explanation see the individual videos.

China Asters are sown in April for the same reason. The difference in the results is astounding.
