Salad (Hardy) ‘Spicy Mix’

Excellent in pots!

For late Winter and late Autumn sowing, for Spring/Summer growing grow my Summer Salad Mix.

Home grown salad is ‘delicious when picked fresh. If you have never tried it, now is a great time to start when good quality salad gets difficult to find, and very expensive. Pick as and when you need it, fresh, crisp and full of vitamins. No soggy salad!

Rocket (eruca vesicaria subsp. Sativa), pak choi (brassica rapa subsp. Chinensis), mizuna (brassica rapa var. Niposinica), mustard (brassica juncea). The varieties are specific.

All members of the Brassicaceae family, they need similar growing conditions.

How to grow:

The germination is excellent, so I prefer to sow either in cells (1-2 seeds per cell) OR, for a really easy life, sprinkled straight into a large pot ready to pick from. They make handsome patio containers.

We can start sowing this mixed blend as soon as the light returns in late Winter.

Light aids germination do not cover seeds with soil.

To begin with, start seeds off undercover, no heating is required, a cold greenhouse will be sufficient. As the weather begins to warm up you can sow seeds outdoors.

As the seeds emerge you can easily distinguish between varieties choosing to grow them on separately, or mixed, they make handsome patio containers.

Protect from wind and sun when first transitioning outside. The shock of being moved from the protected environment of the greenhouse straight out into blazing sunshine and wind can cause plants to wilt. They have a large and tender leaf area.

If this happens promptly move plants back to a shaded protected location and mist. Caught quickly they should recover.

Salad leaves should be tender, wind and rain will toughen and damage leaves, choose a sheltered growing location.

You can pick baby leaves as soon as they are big enough to eat, a 10L container is ideal for a decent crop and a pretty pot.
