Amaranthus ‘Autumn Touch’

Amaranthus cruentus

My new favourite Amaranthus! Green and bronze!

You won’t find it anywhere else which simply astounds me! So it was a must for the new January 2024 seed shop.

It’s upright, needs no staking, no maintenance and goes with everything. Colours of individual plants vary allowing you to choose the ‘perfect stem’ for your vase!

I have been doing a huge Amaranthus trial over the last few years and this variety stood head and shoulders over the rest. I chose carefully making sure plants are easy to grow, flower well and are not too tall or awkward for great garden display.

What ever the weather, 2022 the heatwave and 2023 the wettest and greyest of summers, it looked amazing in the garden all the way to the frosts.

Incredible in vases and bouquets.

In the gallery you can see how good it looks planted alongside Amaranthus ‘Velvet Curtains’ in a mixed garden border!

There are plenty of seeds in your packets so snap it up now while you can for plants for years to come!

How to grow:

Don’t start Amaranthus too early, these plants cannot be planted until all risk of frost has passed.

Seeds will benefit from ‘a bit of warmth’ to germinate, 20-22°C is ideal.

Seeds need light for germination, don’t cover them in compost.

Cutting /Vase Life:

Pick when colourful seed heads have emerged and have started to elongate, stems will feel firmer to the touch.

Place straight into buckets of water and leave to rest preferably overnight this is called conditioning. Removing foliage will help reduce the risk of wilting as well as revealing more of the colourful spires and tails.
